A businessman was convicted yesterday and sentenced to two years in prison for cheating his business partner out of $350,000.
Judge Ky Rithy of Phnom Penh Municipal Court identified the convict as Nuon Meng Hour, 49, a property businessman. He was convicted of breach of trust.
“The court ordered him to pay $350,000 in damages and another 12 million riels (about $3,000) in compensation to the plaintiff,” Mr Rithy said.
In 2014, Mr Meng Hour and his friend and partner Bun Heng invested in a joint-venture property business.
In 2015, Mr Meng Hour took $350,000 from the plaintiff to buy a plot of land located in Phnom Penh’s Por Senchey district.
A month later, Mr Meng Hour had neither land documents nor money to show Mr Heng.
After extending the payment deadline many times, Mr Heng filed a lawsuit against his former partner to the court in May 2016.
