Bollywood might have seen a slump in its hits this year, but overall Indian cinema performed quite well. The delay of Padmavati’s release also came as a jolt to Bollywood. However, unlike Hindi cinema, a host of Tamil and Telugu movies set the cash registers ringing. Some of them even broke all records in the international box office.

Nevertheless, this year too, there were a couple of hits and a couple of misses, perhaps more misses than hits. There have been the usual suspects – the A-listers who manage to pull in crowds every time they release a movie and then there also are a couple of surprise entries.

Here are the top grossing Indian movies of the year. The figures mentioned here are the gross collections of the movie both at the national and the international box offices.

1. Bahubali: The Conclusion: SS Rajamouli’s second instalment of the epic series should not be a surprise. Made on a budget of Rs 250 crore, Bahubali 2 collected Rs 1,706.5 crore, becoming the second highest-grossing Indian movie of all time, surpassed only by Aamir Khan’s Dangal. However, in terms of collections in India, Bahubali 2 surpassed Dangal by a huge margin. Bahubali 2 features Prabhas, Rana Daggubatti, Anushka Shetty, Ramya Krishnan and Tamannah Bhatia.

2. Golmaal Again: The success of the fourth instalment of the Golmaal series is not as surprising as its collections. Each of the Golmaal movies has been successful and Golmaal Again is simply keeping up with the tradition. The Ajay Devgn starrer was made on a budget of Rs 95 crore and has minted Rs 302 crore worldwide. In India alone, the movie collected around Rs 200 crore. Golmaal Again stars Ajay Devgn, Parineeti Chopra, Tabu, Arshad Warsi, Tushar Kapoor, Shreyas Talpade, Kunal Khemu, and Neil Nitin Mukesh.

3. Raees: Shah Rukh Khan’s sizeable number of fans helped in the collection of this movie based on the real life story of bootlegger, Abdul Latif. Made on a budget of Rs 100 crore, the movie barely recovered its budget in India. But its impressive collection from international box offices helped SRK’s movie make Rs 275 crore. Raees stars Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Mahira Khan, Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub and Atul Kulkarni along with SRK.

4. Mersal: Atlee Kumar’s Tamil movie about a pair of twins became a rage soon after its release. The movie starred Thalapathy Vijay in triple roles. Mersal was made on a budget of around Rs 100 crore and it made around Rs 250 crore worldwide. The success of the movie was also fuelled by the BJP’s objection to a couple of scenes where Vijay comments on GST and Digital India. Mersal stars Thalapathy Vijay, Samantha Ruth Prabhu, Nithya Menon and Kajal Aggarwal.

5. Tubelight: Although there were a lot of expectations from this movie, Salman Khan’s Tubelight proved to be a disappointing affair. However, that did not stop bhai fans from setting the cash registers ringing. The movie was made on a budget of Rs 100 crore and made Rs 214 crore in return. Tubelight stars Sohail Khan, Om Puri, Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub, Matin Rey Tangu and Chinese actress Zhu Zhu, along with Salman Khan.

6. Judwaa 2: David Dhawan’s remake of his own 90s Salman Khan-movie starring his son, Varun Dhawan, was a raging hit in the box office. The audience loved it too. Made on a budget of 75 crore, the movie earned Rs 205.5 crore worldwide, and like the original movie, Judwaa 2 also impressed the audience. The movie also stars Taapsee Pannu and Jacqueline Fernandez.

7. Toilet: Ek Prem Katha: Akshay Kumar’s Toilet: Ek Prem Katha was a disappointment but as is the case with most A-list movies, it managed to do good business in the box office. The movie was made on a budget of Rs 40 crore and managed to rake in a significant amount worldwide. Its collections amounted to Rs 200 crore. The movie stars Akshay Kumar, Bhumi Pednekar, and Anupam Kher.

8. Badrinath Ki Dulhania: The second instalment after Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania, Badrinath Ki Dulhania managed to pull in quite a decent amount of crowd. It was made on a budget of Rs 40 crore and earned Rs 198 crore worldwide. In India, it collected Rs 112 crore and was declared a super hit. The movie stars Varun Dhawan and Alia Bhatt.

9. Jolly LLB 2: After the unexpected success of Jolly LLB starring Arshad Warsi, the makers came up with a sequel. Although the first was equivocally deemed as a far superior movie, Akshay Kumar’s version managed to make quite a few bucks. The movie was made on a budget of Rs 35 crore and made Rs 182 crore in return. Jolly LLB 2 stars Akshay Kumar, Huma Qureshi, Saurabh Shukla and Annu Kapoor.

10. Khaidi no. 150: This Telugu movie, featuring star Chiranjeevi was written by AR Murugadoss. Khaidi no. 150 was made on a conservative budget of around Rs 60 crore and had recovered around Rs 42 crore on its opening day itself. The movie earned Rs 165 crore globally, becoming one of the highest grossing Indian movies of the year. Khaidi no. 150 also stars Kajal Aggarwal and features Ram Charan in a special appearance.
