A 24-year-old Buddhist monk at Phnom Penh’s Chbar Ampov pagoda is under investigation by the Ministry of Cults and Religion after sexual photos of him with a university student circulated on Facebook yesterday.
Photos of Venerable Yin Vay, also a professor with Sihamoni Reachea Buddhist University in Phnom Penh, were shared many times on Facebook, with people commenting the monk should be defrocked for his anti-Buddhist monk behaviour.
Venerable Muong Sokchea, a member of the Municipal Buddhist Monks Department, said the acts of Venerable Yin Vay have violated Buddhist principles.
“If he really brought the girl to have sex with him at his pagoda room as the photos, which have been leaked and posted on Facebook seem to show, then he has violated Buddhist principles,” he said.
“His actions seriously harm the honour of religion and the reputation of monks.
“We have already invited him to a meeting,” he added.
“If we determine that he has had sex with and is having a love affair with the girl, he will be defrocked.”
Seng Sophon, deputy chief of the municipal cults and religion department, said that monks are prohibited from drinking alcohol, watching pornography, having sex, taking a partner and even driving, according to Buddhist religious principles.
Mr Sophon said a monk’s main duty is to teach and educate people to commit good acts, as well as preserve and promote the Buddhist religion and its values.
Venerable Yin Vay could not be reached for comment yesterday.
